In 1853 there appeared in England a book on the marvels of seashore life, illustrated directly on the lithographic stone by the author. This book, A Naturalist's Rambles on the Devonshire Coast, by Philip Henry Gosse, was the first of its kind in any language, and all others have been imitators and followers of this prototype.
